Ahh you’re finally here
So on issue 1, I want to share with you a little story, all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down.
No, seriously, a little story about how I got to where I am now from where I was in 2019.
For me getting into water/Ocean/surf photography was something I have always been fascinated with from a young age. Having surfed since I was very young like 8-9 years old, watching many surf films, and YouTube videos of surfing and surfers over the years, as much as the actual surfers were cool, I have always loved the cinematography and the art of getting the shot.
I have always thought, wow, what a cool job.
During a little family trip to Cornwall one year, we popped over to Porthleven and found a shop called “Waves Gallery”, my first thought was, oh this is going to be some pretentious art gallery with overpriced eye-sores that is located next to a prime surf spot. Hence the name.
I was massively wrong, what I found was a room full of the most stunning Wave and surf photography I have ever seen, I mean you couldn’t find a piece of wall big enough to hang a towel, they were adorned with massive prints and images of Cornwall’s insane surf.
This was the work of a guy called Mike Lacey, a renowned photographer in Cornwall, and man, does this guy have some skill? Since seeing his work I have wanted nothing but to get a camera, a water housing, and get in the sea.
Here is one of the first shots I ever took in the water. This was taken down in freshwater West, in a £50 housing I bought off eBay. For my little handheld Sony camera.
This was also before Gowersecrets was even a thing.
My Seafrogs housing I use to take all of my current images
